Tile is the right floor for a bathroom: it handles water, it is easy to clean and it wears well. Its one drawback is that it feels cold. A heated floor fixes that. The warmth sits right under the tile, so the floor is comfortable to stand on, from the shower to the vanity.

It is a small detail you notice every morning, long after the renovation is finished. The best time to add one is during a bathroom renovation, when the old floor is coming out anyway, so it can be planned into your new bathroom from the start.

A heated floor is only as good as the floor under it. Once the old flooring is out, we check the subfloor and prepare it. It has to be solid, clean and flat, because the heating sits in a thin layer between the subfloor and the tile, and any flex or dip can crack the tile or damage the heating.

Then the heating mat is laid over the prepared floor. You can see this stage in our East Gwillimbury project, right next door to Newmarket: the mat went down over the subfloor, and the room was finished with tile and a walk-in glass shower.

A heated floor is an electrical system under your feet, so the wiring matters. It is inspected before the tile goes on, so any problem is found while the floor is still open, not after it is covered for good. Our electricians are licensed and fully insured.

Then comes the tile. Laying tile over floor heating takes care: the heating has to be fully covered and protected, and the tile set evenly so the warmth spreads across the floor. Because we do the prep, the heating and the tile ourselves, there is no gap between trades where something can slip through.
